WASHINGTON - At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing last Thursday, Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., asked General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to provide an unclassified assessment of options for the potential use of U.S. military force in the Syrian conflict. Levin’s request was a follow-up to questions asked at the hearing by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
Gen. Dempsey sent the following letter [PDF] in response to Levin’s question at the hearing.
Levin and McCain sent Dempsey a letter on Friday with additional questions related to Syria and Afghanistan. Levin said today that he looks forward to Dempsey’s response to the Levin-McCain letter later this week.
