Levin Statement on Sequestration Report

Friday, September 14, 2012

WASHINGTON – Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., made the following statement regarding the sequestration report released today by the Office of Management and Budget:

“Today’s report states that ‘sequestration would be deeply destructive to national security, domestic investments, and core government functions,’ and that ‘Congress can and should take action to avoid it by passing a comprehensive and balanced deficit reduction package.’ I completely agree, as do the vast majority of members of Congress, which is why I am confident sequestration will not occur. The need for members of Congress to compromise on a plan that makes prudent spending cuts and restores revenue is urgent. I will continue to work with members of both parties to avoid destructive and unnecessary sequestration. I believe a strong signal from Congress that we are prepared to avoid these damaging cuts would help to avoid the economic damage that may occur even before the cuts take effect, and I hope we can send that signal soon.”
